It's very difficult for me to pick a favorite. I like all of them. Dick Francis is my favorite author, I dread the day he choses to quit writing. I was very saddened to hear about the loss of his wife, Mary.

Loved the hero as a writer. And struggling to make it...his interaction with the teen age son, teaching him to make shepherds pie out of frozen beef sandwiches. But what can compare with the hero struggling to find his way out of the dark woods with an arrow in his back??? I want to have that sort of determination.

I have enjoyed all of his books and I have all if not most of them! Many of them are first editions bought at used book stores! I rank his books with Erle Stanley Gardner and Rex Stout for characters and holding the reader's interests! I hope he continues to write more after the tragic loss of his wife! Dick Francis is one of the all time great mystery writers! Enuff said!I picked Shattered because it is his most recent and I learned a lot about the glass blowing business! His books are entertaining and educational!

15 years ago, my mother handed me a book by Dick Francis and told me : " you better read this if you want to improve your real english" and sha was right. In fact, in the beginning I've learned whole sentences of some books and used it in my letters or during a conversation. Even now, since we are so much out of practice, we are back at Francis again to brush off our english.

I am a horse person myself, and was introduced to Mr. Francis' books by my Aunt, also a horse person. Since then the addiction has grown, however I do not wish to go for therapy ;-) I am very fond of England as well, and thus can live vicariously throught the books. Thank you Mr. Francis!

Hi, It is easier to say which one is not a favorite which is Second Wind. I have hardback copies of all his books beginning with Dead Cert and ending with Shattered. I also have several of his book on audio tape and I listen to them over and over again as well as read his novels over and over again. I do have extra copies of several of his books as friends would buy them at flea markets and 2nd hand stores when they found them. The lady told me there would be no more and that after his wife died, he had hinted that she was the one writing them all along. This sounds almost like an urban legend to me, so I'd like to know if anyone else has heard this and can shed more light on it.

I love "stings" and the horse switching and cross atlantic travelling is fast paced and exciting. I have read and will read Dick Francis continually. Even if I've read the novel 6 or 7 times ( as I have several of them) I still enjoy the characters, settings, plot and excellant use of the english language.

I think that no store or library should allow a DF book to leave the building late in the day. I can not tell you how many hours of sleep I have given up in the race for the ending. I am sorry to say that I am just as bas when it comes to re-reads as to new novels.

I've been reading Dick Francis books for at least 5 years now and at the ripe age of 17 I can honestly say that he's my all-time favorite author. These books have had a huge influence over me and I often find myself wanting to move to England, go to the races, and develop the gift of reading people. The Danger inspired me to go into the FBI and I hope he's inspired everyone else as well. Great site--keep up the good work!

I love all of Mr. Francis's books. My mother was a great fan, and her favorite birthday present was an autographed copy of the latest Dick Francis. Mr. Francis came to Nashville for several years, attending the racing here, and often held a book signing. He was always gracious.

I was never much of a reader until my mother-in-law gave me my first Dick Francis book. Now I read them all the time. This website is great. I can keep track of which ones I have read and which will be my next one. Recently got a book on tape of "Straight" read by Simon Prebble. EXCELLENT!!! Now I normally have one to listen to in the car and one at home to read. Sometimes I get a bit depressed by how sad some of the hero's are and have to switch authors for a bit of light humor. In this case I normally real a Lawrence Block book with the hero "Bernie Roadenbar", But I always seem to come back to DF. It is amazing how much less TV I watch now.

We very much hope he will go on writing more books for as long as possible!!! I've reread most books so often that I desperately "need" more! Being very heavily involed with horses, and having a reat love for them, I can relate to many topics discussed in Dick Francis books. Racing is such a tough game, and is often portrayed very well in his books. His approach to writing is fantastic, and I always enjoy a new book!!

It's hard to choose a favorite, because I like almost all of the Francis books, but I especially like To The Hilt and Decider. Mr. Francis' books are too good to put down the first time and too good not to read more than once!!!!! I am especially fond of Recorded Books narrated by Simon Prebble, because he does justice to the characters. With Recorded Books, I can "read" while I am on the road.

I have "read" most of Dick Francis' books by listening to them--books on tape. What I like most is one book never seems like a copy of another--plots are so diverse.

I've enjoyed reading each book .. I've not read Rat Race, Nerve or the latest. I check out every second hand book stall at markets for the books not in my collection and enjoy re-reading each story like visiting an old friend. My sympathies to Mr Francis and his family on the loss of his wife. Your legacy is in your work together which has brought the joy and excitment of racing to all your fans. I love all Dick Francis books! The first one I found was Banker, and I purchased it second hand at a store in a campsite. I purchased it because I had a horse on the front, I read the entire book that weekend and I have never looked back. I now own almost all of his books, unfortunately most of them are soft cover, but the latest 5 - 6 I managed to purchase in hard cover. I have re-read all of my collection atleast 3 times. I will always treasure Banker as the first Dick Francis book I ever purchased!!

As an ex-Librarian who purchased the books for the library, it was always my pleasure to get "first dibs" on the new Dick Francis. Now I search the web in July for the new title so that I can put in my request for the new title and still get "first dibs". I am about the read them all again in sequence.

I was thrilled to discover a Dick Francis novel more than twenty years ago. As a horse crazy child and now adult I can never find enough good fiction that portrays horses accurately. The huge bonus is that the books are fabulous mysteries too. I love how his characters are everyday people doing extraordinary things. No matter how many he writes, the world will never have enough Dick Francis novels!

Decider, hands down I loved the cool ideas that he had. I can't wait to renovate my own camper!(ha ha ha)
High Stakes Although one of the older books, published in 1975 it is a great read and one I have enjoyed rereading.
"Nerve" My favorite fiction writer of all time! Dick Francis is unique in bringing to light the un- common in characters and occupations, by his singular gift of illuminating his heroes and villans with that special glow, who define with actions more than words, with endless variety in unique and tightly drawn plots, the facets of Good and Evil in human nature.

Just starting in to Dick Francis seriously after reading portions of books at various times. Starting with Longshot. All mysteries have indiscretions, certainly, but its nice to read something that treats indiscretions so discreetly. Having read reviews, and as I said, portions, I can see the validity in the comments about the lead character always being the same, despite the name and circumstance. Maybe its like 50s TV, the same ensemble cast but with a different story everyweek, a PLAYHOUSE 90 for mysteries. Very enjoyable.

When I am ill or a little blue; and need something to concentrate the mind. I loose myself again and again into my Dick Francis books. I freqently pick up 10lb Penalty and read it cover to cover. My husband never reads novels but has a little check that I am OK when he sees these books out. They are such fun to read. Thank you very much

Finally I have found a Dick Francis site. I have been a racing and reading fan for a long time. I used to compete in 3 day events and showjumping and owned a retired race horse in Germany before I came to the US 12 years ago. His books are great to read and even for people who have no knowledge of this field easy to understand and give good inside into the business. And of course they also big fun to read. My biggest thrill would be to meet Mr. Francis in person and have his autographed picture.

I have been a huge fan of Dick Francis since 1982. Eagerly awaiting my annual Christmas novel from my wife I was disappointed to learn that he would not have a book coming out this year. I only just found out that Mrs. Francis had passed away. With all that I picked up "Come to Grief" out of my collection and started reading it for the fourth time. Thank you this website information.
