I am sorry Mr. Francis is giving up his literary career after 10 lb. Penalty! When you find an author you like, you wish he/she would go on writing forever. Seeing as how he's been writing for 35 years, I guess he deserves a break!

One thing I have noticed among the many comments from around the world, DF fans love to re-read his books, over and over again. I confess that I do too. I have all his books in hardback or paperback. This was the first book I read and I was hooked. I especially like the turning of events and the complexity of the main character. I also like the fact that it isn't cluttered with vulgar language and explicit sex. I would recommend it to my teenage children. My Dad has read all of Dick's books.

This website is absolutely amazing! Well done to whoever thought up the idea. I have been a Dick Francis fan for about 8 years now and I have read them all several times over. It is because of his books that I got interested in racing in the first place - I am now completely obsessed and anxiously await each new book.

It helps that the book comes out about the same time as my birthday and that Mr. Francis always comes to Middleburg for a book signing about then! I've been a devoted fan for more than 20 years. I have all of your books and have read each at least twice, some more than a dozen times. You create a world in which ordinary people can do extraodinary things. When I read your books I enter that world. If I'm stressed or overtaxed, I read your books to come back to center. One of my goals in life is to tell you in person how important your books have been to me. This is the next best way. Thank-you, please keep it up for the next twenty years.

I feel the top three mystery authors of all time are Dick Francis, Ed McBain and Bill Pronzini I have read all the book (except 10lb penalty) and I am currently getting all the ones that are on tape and rehearing them. He is the best.

I have read and enjoyed most all of Mr. Francis books. He has the great ability to grab ones interest from the first pages of his stories.It is only a master story teller that can do that. In todays world so many writers reley on sex and vulgar language to try to hold onto the readers attentions. How refreshing Mr. Francis is.

Although I live on a ranch in Colorado, the books of Dick Francis speak to me. I ride horses for entirely different reason--working cows--but I enjoy reading about horse racing. Though his books I have learned alot about h.racing through the many different outlooks that his book brings. I also like very much like the men he protrays in his book--the unassuming strong very human male.

I believe in hard work. I have not always found it to be a quality I would endear. Time changed my perspective with this aspect of life. I enjoy the art of another's hard, persistent, and evolving labors. This sounds crass, as if to present a tone of enjoying another's pains of labor. Rather, I enjoy the time and efforts one puts into their craft, skill, trade, love that makes it appear so at ease with their lives. Mr. Francis is one who ranks in the field of literary works as one of a very few I hold with high regard. I have inclinations of great respect for two other authors' pursuit of style: Robert Heinlein and Ernest Hemmingway. Mr. Dick Francis sits among this personal choice of favored authors. I can say that I had little interest in who I read, merely picking up a book for time. I happened upon Driving Force as an unabridged tape recording and thought it worth a try. Had I taken the time to read the fly of its story being based upon horses, I would have left it on the shelf. Horses are an animal I hold with much respect and, until having read my first encounter with Mr. Francis' world of horses, I merely believed that faint level of respect was all I would ever need to know about them. Stories based upon those making a livelihood? No. Until the end of the cassette, I could not wait to go to the library for other books Mr. Francis might have written. I knew nothing of his contributions: literary nor in sport. Why do I find Mr. Francis' works intriguing? Down to earth, hard working characters, dialogue, the main protangonist having ethics of the sort that I consider rarely placed in characters I've encountered in fiction - and I enjoy this tremendously - clear, descriptives of places, people, action. Many a time we encounter a character that keeps us invigorated for the ride. Mr. Francis is the character that sparks his endeavors in his fictional works. Sorry that I am to have encountered him so late. Pleased that I am that he pursued the art of story telling from a life he knew and expanded. Respectfully, Renée Hankins

I have been a fan of Dick Francis since I was in high school in the late 1960's. Horse crazy, everything I read had to do with horses. I had run out of anything new to read on horses and came across 2 of Mr. Francis' books. I was hooked from that time on. Several years ago, I wrote Mr. Francis to let him know how much I enjoyed his books and received a lovely reply from him. He can't write them fast enough for me.
I've been trying to answer an email sent to me last Friday asking about an email address for Dick Francis, but I keep getting the MAILER-DAEMON telling me it couldn't be sent. So I decided to post my answer here and maybe they will see it. -- An excerpt of a letter I received from Dick Francis in November says: "I do not have Internet access and I have no wish to become connected. So no E-mail address! Sorry." Like so many others I am a huge Dick Francis fan. I have all of his books and constantly read them over and over! His characters are so well defined, and I always learn something new, even on a re-read. I really enjoy the detail work that Mr. Francis does on his research. I constantly use him as a reference in every day life, because his books are so informative. Unfortunately for all other authors, if I find even a minor detail to be incorrect, I cannot read them again, if they don't measure up to Mr. Francis' level of research I don't have time for them! I hope he writes many many more books!

Had the pleasure of getting Mr. Francis to sign my program at Gulfstream Race Course one day LONG ago - what a thrill! Have ALL his books, most in hardback, but looking for some older ones to replace the paperbacks that I have now. Wish I could find Sport Of Queens with the pictures in hardback priced reasonably so I could buy it. Reread them all starting with Sport Of Queens to 10 Lb. Penalty (or latest one) each year. Wish it could go on forever!! Mr. Francis, you make life so much more enjoyable for so many.

Perhaps I'm a bit odd in that I so savor a Dick Francis novel that a single book often takes me a month OR MORE to read! I savor each page like a rich truffle and don't want to eat it all at once. I take small portions before bed time, and then drift off to sleep with visions of horses and mystery.

What delightful stories, full of imagination, fun, intrigue, mystery, suspense, good common sense; without the violence and sex that some feel necessary for a sense of realism. I use his books in my jr. high lit classes, and the kids enjoy the stories. He's on my list of "watch for the latest" authors.

As a teacher and lifelong lover of learning, I'm not only entertained by reading a Dick Francis book, but also educated with wonderful vocabulary, a variety of geographical settings and information on many occupations such as photography, wine-making, etc. What a TREAT!

Am new to the internet, but in no way new to Dick Francis' books. Have everyone of them in paperback, and also about half of them in hardback, plus as many as I have been able to get ahold of in audio form. Dick Francis is my absolute favorite author and am delighted to have found this web site!
I wrote a letter to Dick Francis about 2 months ago and just received a reply. He has a collection of short stories; Field of Thirteen coming out in the fall, and plans a novel for 1999. He says he is taking a rest after that. Hopefully, for all of his fans this will not be his last book. I cannot imagine a year without a new Dick Francis book to read! What a thrill for me to get a letter back from my favorite author. Just wanted to pass along this info.

I found out the title from my library's listings a month or so ago. I've long been a Dick Francis fan and an 8th grade literature teacher. So, this past year I combined the two. I took the kids to the library, and everyone checked out a Dick Francis book - whichever one they chose, it didn't matter. We spent two weeks reading . . . just reading, with me available to help them with things they didn't understand (notably British terms). I'd asked them to keep track of character traits of the hero, important plot developments, and to note the importance of horses AND of another subject. When all of this was finished, I split them into groups of five. Their assignment was threefold: tell about their own book; together find common characteristics of their books; concoct the outline of a "new" Dick Francis book. It was a marvelous venture for most of the kids, and an OK one for the rest. Of course, they enjoyed the action of the books, and they liked coming up with an idea of their own for a new book. Thanks to Dick Francis for providing this teacher with an opportunity to do this!

I am looking for copies of Dick Francis mysteries from the PBS "Mystery!" series. They ran on PBS in the early/mid 80's and had as their main character Sid Halley, the former jockey-turned-detective. Do you know of anyway of obtaining copies? I have contacted PBS and my local British imports store, to no avail.

I like this one in particular, becuase it was the first novel I read that got me so interested in Dick Francis's mistery books. There is always something to learn from his main character. His characters are never complicated to the point that it becomes difficult to understand, and follow the story. I enjoy reading Mr. Francis's novels.

I have been an avid "Dick Francis" reader since 1984. I am a Canadian currently living in Caracas, Venezuela. My grandparents and a good deal of my relatives are British (Britstol areas) and we lived and worked in Great Britain about 7 years ago. I have always appreciated the way his 'main character' is self-effacing and oblivious to his own 'do the right thing' approach. Dick Francis carefully researches the profession of each character with great detail so that the reader learns something more than about horses... and I love horses. I am looking forward to his next book (I have not read his latest as I have not seen it in English here). I have always loved equestrian events so his books are a 'smashing' combination of horse. mystery, comedy and thoughtfulness!

Bookstores from all over register to sell their books there, so it's like you are browsing in hundreds of bookstores all over the country. I've tried them out and it works great. Dick Francis is truly an amazing writer. As I grew up on a horse farm, reading his books took on an extension of my own life. They are truly great mysteries and all readers of fictoin should give at least one of his over 30 books a try. They are all tremendous!

My family are all addicted to Dick Francis novels. I'm not much into horses, but who needs to be? The books are exciting, intricate and very much like quicksand... just waiting to pull you in till you're inextricably caught! I can never wait to read the next one.. and all the ones I have so far I kneo so well, I feel lke the characters are friends (the good guys, that is!). Thanks for many many hours of thrilling anticipation, way into the night and hang the house work!

My favorite is For Kicks because of the "day in the life of a stable lad" aspect (with him pretending to not be a trainer of course), I like that scenario best. I have read all of his books and tried reading books by other authors with similar stuff,but they don't cut it. Only Dick Francis has what it takes to make me keep reading!

I just fininshed reading A Field of Thirteen. I thought it was okay. I am so use to the great character development of DF's books, that i found short stories a little lacking. The stories are okay, I just want more! I wouldn't miss having it in my collection, and maybe when I re-read I'll enjoy it more. I am just hoping that he writes another full length book for next year. DF withdrawal is a terrible thing!

It's simply the best. I love it. Dick Francis is one of my favourite novelist. I seldom read and therfore I listen to the spoken word cassettes avaliable from the local library usally read by Tony Brittion. Even though I have heard them all a thousand times I never get tired of them because they are such good stories. Thankyou for all the enjoyment that I have recieved from listening to your books.

Picking a favorite is not easy. He is consistent and interesting. A big relief from the glut of "slashers" and "body counts" that turn me off.

I have read all of his books except the biographies and I am rebuilding a complete collection, many of which were lost in a basement flood. My 'ex' threw them on the floor and the rains came in.

Did DF not write a book this year? I was looking for it for Christmas, as usual but there doesn't appear to be one. Is he well? Is there a new book coming? If so, do you know when?
His new book this year is called "Field of Thirteen." It's a compilation of short stories written by DF, some have been published before in magazines and various other places. I love the way he cptures the so intangible and yet real bond which exists between horse and rider; the way he experiences real life in understating the extremes and the way he manages to portray a level of simplicity and yet a complexity in his characters and perhaps more importantly in their beliefs, stregths and weaknesses.
