Favorite: Most of them, can't pick just one!
My very favorite author. I have all his fiction books and am trying to get hardback copies of the ones I have only in paperback. Have read every book multiple times, some as many as 15 or 20 times! I only discovered him by accident, once when I had checked out about 15 books. I could faint when I think how close I came to returning that book unread!

I found Dick Francis quite by accident. When a college student, I lived for the day school was out so I could get back to reading my mysteries! I would go to the library and check out about 20 books, then shut myself away for several days while I gorged myself on them. I'd never read Dick Francis, didn't even know about him, but liked the sound of The Danger. However, I nearly returned it unread; but my husband had read it and said it was very good, so I read it myself - and became firmly hooked. When I think how close I came to sending that book back unread, I could faint! Since then I have purchased all of his books, and read every one multiple times, some as many as 15 or 20 times. Even though I could practically quote some of the books word-for-word, they never fail to grip me just as they did at first reading. I can hardly bear the thought of the day when I won't be able to hotfoot it to the nearest book store for his newest. Right now I am trying to replace some of my paperbacks (they just don't hold up, do they?) with hardbacks. I consider myself Dick Francis' #1 fan, but I am sure all of his fans feel the same way.

I have been reading DF for so long I don't remember not loving his books. I have all but two, most in paperback, a few hardbacks, some duplicates. Re-read them all the time. Usually twice a year. once I start one, when I finish it I pick up the next one. I am still trying to get my kids interested. 16 and 14 year old boys. Oneday, in fact my oldest son was the one who turned me on to this website. Great Kid!

All the Dick Francis books I've read have been delights for me. The style, the stories, the research, the details, the fights, the characters enchant me. My own -not so-secret ambition : write a novel half as entertaining and well-researched... And get other readers' feelings about Dick Francis's books. I discovered Dick Francis' books about 10 years ago. I read all available to me at the time and each year waited anxiously for a new one to come out, got it and read it right away. They are my favorite books, and while I wait for a new one I go back and reread the others to keep me busy. I have a hardcover copy of almost all of them.
The Danger, Rat Race, Hot Money I love them all, though Sid Halley books are too much for me: I couldn't bear to finish Come to Grief.

Before reading Dick Francis, I never thought too much about mysteries. But after reading Driving Force, I was hooked! We have a used book store in our town and I am there all the time to get more DF books. I just can't get enough!

I really can't choose a fave, they are all so wonderful. A suggestion for those of us who've read all the df books; try Elizabeth george--she has excellent characters.
Have read everything (except A Jockey's Life) at least twice. Dick Francis changed my perceptions of life. I read him like some people read Shakespeare and find myself often quoting him.

I got hooked onto DF from inheriting a few paperbacks from my mother. This lead to a desire to read all his books. He is such a desriptive writer, I find that certain books I cannot reread to soon, as some of the actions of the villians are indelibly etched in my mind. I'm not much impressed with the 2 movies I've seen made from DF books; not quite the same impact.

It breaks my heart to think that maybe there won't be a new book each fall...I have not read another book that holds a candle to any Dick Francis book. The details are so subtle, which is why I find something new each time I re-read a book of his. Thankyou, Mr. Francis.
Well, there will be at least one more mystery. In a letter I received from DF a few months ago, he says, "I hope that you have enjoyed Field of Thirteen which was published in September. It is my first (and only) collection of short stories and quite a departure from my novels. I plan to write another novel for next year. After that I think I might take a rest! You never know!" So we can look forward to at least one more.

I have a question on his book, 'Come to Grief' (1995) In the book, there is a passage; "Cheering a little he rocked round in a U-turn and set off for the return to Paddington Station where he assured me again that......" In this, what does 'rocked round in a U-turn' mean? Could anyone help me understand this?

I have never been much of a horse person but a friend convinced me to try Mr. Francis' books. I'm so glad she did! I've learned so much about a huge assort- ment of subjects. And yes, I have a deeper appreciation for all things equine.

I find it difficult to name a favorite Dick Francis book. My favorite is usually the one I am rereading. He is a master in his genre and I hope he never stops writing. I can't wait for his next one.

Like one of your guests, I chanced upon Dick Francis' condensed novel in a Readers Digest compilation and and read Enquiry in early Jan 98 and every month I've read two or at least one of his books. I've even fervently introduced co-workers to his books and one of them has enjoyed his books. Wonderful. Amazing that he has so many fans all over the world!

I picked up "Hot Money" for 25 cents at the library book sale a few months ago and got hooked so I have read at least 20 of them over the last three months or so. Now I try to ration myself to one book per weekend - have bought them all now in second hand book stores. I do love the Sid Halley books. We used to live about 15 miles from Newmarket, went to the races quite often and also saw the horses being exercised on the "heath". So it feels like coming home when I read DF books. I wish him a long, long life so he can write some more for all of us to enjoy.

Actually, I like all his books, some of course, better than others. It's hard to pick a favorite. I will say I prefer the ones that are set in the actual horse business rather than other backgrounds, but practically anything he writes is good. I am not strong on short stories though.

Driving Force was terrific! Like so many of Dick Frances' stories, the action and mystery started in the first few pages. I am reading Field of Thirteen right now. In "Song For Mona" (which I read last night), I really was mad at that Joanie Vine. What a shocking ending!
All I can say is, I love his books- if he ever decides to do a story with harness racing, I CAN HELP!

Just finished Blood Sport. Found two typos in it. (Dick, your editor has got to get a better proofreader!) But the story was good (as always.) This site has given me other titles to look for at my library. They beat watching the idiot box. And I love the idea that I might actually go to England on a tour of racetracks someday.

Straight is really only one of five or so of my favorites; For Kicks, Flying Finish, To the Hilt, Banker. . .as I try to list them I want to add them all. I am so glad to know that others re-read Dick Francis' books! I also listen to them in the car, as I don't have to concentrate on them because I know them so well. I am endlessly grateful for these wonderful books, and sad that there may be no more but appreciative of the enormous effort it must take to write such graceful and evocative prose.

I received my Readers Digest Condensed Book that same day which featured "HOT MONEY" and after reading it, I was hooked!! I purchased all his previous books and every one since. I think the amazing thing about Dick Francis is that his books have so much in common--all mysteries, with racing involved somehow, written in first person, with a humble, resiliant hero--and yet remain endlessly interesting and distinct from one another. I started reading DF in jr. high, and continue to reread his books every few years or so. It's a tribute to his talent, too, that when I reread a book, even though I know what's going to happen, I still feel the same can't-put-the-book-down urgency as the first time I read it!

I usually don't read a lot of fiction or mystery novels. I was given an early hard cover of To The Hilt and intended to use it as a door stop. By now I have read every word Francis has written. My wife also enjoys his great adventure stories. In Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA, we are as far removed from steeplechase horse racing as you can get.

Oh, I'm so glad I found this site! I just love Dick Francis books, and have all (exept for Odds Against...). The weird Swedish publishers doesn't realize DF's greatness, so they don't translate his books anymore. But they're much better in English, so I don't mind.

I have had the pleasure of collecting Dick Francis Books first edition since 1980. I am lacking four or five American first editions. Although I have been on the "net" for several years this is the first time that I thought there would be a web site for Dick.

What a beautiful website! I became a Dick Francis fan just a couple of years ago when he came to our bookstore for a signing--read about 28 of his books before he got to the store! He is supposed to come back to the store in October as part of his "Second Wind" tour--it's not confirmed yet, but I have high hopes! He is an absolutely lovely man, his wife is wonderful, too, and his son Felix is a hoot. Looking forward to browsing through here when I have a little bit more time. Some of the books have been getting too involved in descriptions, in "To the Hilt", the descriptions of painting styles, colors, and the mixing of colors, have no meaning for me because I don't know what he is talking about. I love the overall writing style of Dick Francis, but his main characters almost always choose to try to find the villian themselves rather than call in the police, or the even get medical attention when seriously hurt. I know this is fiction but I would think that if a man is severly beaten, thrown down a mountain, shot, or stabbed he would need professional help. Still I throughly enjoy his books and will continue to read his fiction, and look for ward to the new books. Thanks

As a librarian, I "discovered" Dick Francis' Nerve in the early sixties, and immediately introduced him to my parents. My father, who is now a lonely 85 year old widower rereads his complete collection regularly. I think he finds a certain comfort in knowing he will like the book, knowing that it comes out alright, and perhaps having read it in happier times. I always get him the new one for his birthday.

I have never in my life read a book that kept me guessing like every book by Dick Francis. He also has the unnerving ability to make the reader feel pain!

I have been collecting Dick Francis books in New Zealand for several years and have all except Enquiry. More than half of the collection are H/B's and most of those are 1st editions. It is very difficult to pick up signed editions here. Is it possible to purchase them (signed that is on release date? I think the site is really great and keep up the good work. Regards John

To John Edwards / New Zealand I have found just one signed copy here in a used book store -- there were more, but the signature did not look right and I took along my personal letter from DF to compare and make sure I had the right thing - so be careful when buying a signed copy. You could also phone or write to one of the book stores where DF is going to be in the next month to sign his new book and they might possibly be nice enough to send a signed copy of "Second Wind" to you. Wouldn't hurt to try.

HOT MONEY made me Dick Francis fan forever. I love Malcolm's character. I always read in English original text, but all Dick Francis books are published in Japanese. It is amazing that you can find his books in every big book store in Tokyo. They must be quite a sale here in Japan, too!

The scene in which the main character is tied up in a car in a desert has stayed with me for years. The writing must be fantastic to do so. I now will have to go and re-read all the novels I read before and this time keep track of them.

Sir Francis truly writes the most enjoyable books. Each character is totally exposed of all inner feelings; fears, loves, passions, and wants. Bring on more.

I was introduced to these books my junior year of college, and have made it a point to read and possess all of them these 15 years. I have a small book case in my bedroom, and of the hundreds of books I have, his are the ones that I keep close to hand -- for reading in the wee hours, or on a cold, dreary, lazy weekend morning, or whenever the mood strikes. The woman who owns the nearby bookstore lets me know when she gets new Dick Francis novels in, so I have first dibs. I adore his books!

Hi..just discovered this author. Really like this book. However, as an old newspaper woman, pressmen print papers. Printers set type. No one sets typed anymore. It is all done electronically. But with all the fascinating jockey stuff, I was shocked at the non-accurate newspaper stuff. Will hunt for more of his books. thanks

I just started reading Dick Francis a couple of weeks ago. I really enjoyed both novels I read: High Stakes and Rat Race. I'm looking forward to reading more of his stuff. I was involved with Standardbred Horse Racing (Trotters) for about 15 years (72-87) so I enjoy the racing backdrop and his style is very spellbinding.

The Edge My husband said to me some years ago. Here's a great book to read that you would love! (Dick Francis was the author). Naturally being contrary, I refused to read the book - thus denying myself several years of reading pleasure. Serves me right! However, I have made up for it since and read every book he has written. Every year in December I rush out and buy the new novel for my birthday. His stories are wonderful, and his heroes really "nice" men. More power to him.
